Afrobeats star Rema has paid heartfelt tribute to music legend D’banj for laying the groundwork for the genre’s international rise, particularly in the United Kingdom.

During his sold-out concert at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday, Rema surprised fans by bringing D’banj on stage, where he praised the veteran for playing a key role in Afrobeats’ global journey.

He highlighted D’banj’s 2012 hit single Oliver Twist, which became the first Nigerian song to break into the UK Official Chart’s top 10, marking a milestone moment for the genre.

“First of all, I want to appreciate you for opening the doors. We [the new generational artists] do not do it alone,” Rema said. “You were one of the first ones to bring Afrobeats to the UK. You and Don Jazzy held it down. Y’all opened that door.”

Rema also gave credit to Don Jazzy, D’banj’s longtime collaborator, acknowledging the duo’s efforts in setting the stage for today’s wave of Afrobeats stars.

“I appreciate you for life. I love you from the bottom of my heart,” Rema added. “If you never existed, I would have never existed.”
