Barely two weeks after being sworn in as Councillor for Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Oluwakemi Rufai has passed away.

Rufai, the only female councillor in the legislative council, reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, after a brief illness.

Her death was confirmed in separate statements by Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman Sesan Olowa and Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman Rasaki Kasali, who both described it as a devastating loss to the council and the community.

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), through its spokesman Seye Oladejo, expressed profound grief, describing Rufai as a “rising star within the APC” who embodied “commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion.”

Oladejo noted that Rufai’s short time in office reflected her dedication to community development and unwavering loyalty to the party’s ideals. He extended condolences to her family, the Ibeju-Lekki community, and her constituents, adding that “her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten.”
