Ibadan Mourns As Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Is Laid To Rest

Ibadan came to a standstill on Friday as the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, was laid to rest in a solemn ceremony that blended royal tradition with heartfelt tributes.
The funeral service, held at the historic Cathedral Church of Saint Peter’s, Aremo, drew a large gathering of dignitaries, clerics, community leaders, and residents who came to honour the revered monarch.
Presiding over the service, Archbishop of Ibadan Province (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, described the late Oba as “more than a king,” calling him a father figure, a guide, and a source of hope whose reign was marked by compassion, justice, and dedication to the welfare of his people.
He praised Oba Olakulehin’s ability to foster unity and cultural pride during periods of change, adding that his inclusive vision inspired both young and old. The archbishop urged attendees to keep the monarch’s legacy alive by upholding the values of love, peace, and service he championed.
Outside the church, the city reflected its grief as traditional drummers, cultural troupes, and mourners in black attire filled the streets to witness the final rites.
Among those present were political figures, traditional rulers, and notable personalities who delivered glowing tributes to the 43rd Olubadan’s enduring legacy.
As Ibadan bids farewell, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin’s reign—defined by dignity, unity, and an unwavering love for his people—remains etched in the city’s history.
