“I Work Five Times Harder Because I’m Blind” – Cobhams Asuquo

Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer, Cobhams Asuquo, has candidly shared insights into his life and career as a blind artist, emphasizing the determination and resilience that drive his success.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the One Hit crooner opened up about the challenges and triumphs of living with visual impairment. He revealed that his blindness has pushed him to work significantly harder than his peers in the music industry.
“My awareness of myself as a blind person makes me work five times as hard as others,” he said. “There’s a stereotype that blind people are incapable, and I’ve made it my mission to prove that wrong. I want to show that I can be capable of so much more.”
Cobhams encouraged people living with disabilities to accept their reality and draw strength from it, rather than shy away from the truth of their circumstances.
“I think it’s totally okay to be blind,” he stated. “The world has become overly sensitive, and while that has its place, I believe in calling things what they are. Don’t live in denial or hide behind euphemisms. Own your reality, and find strength in it.”
He stressed the importance of language in shaping perception, noting that terms like “impaired” might downplay the extent of his condition.
“I’m not visually impaired. I’m completely blind — I can’t see a thing. And that’s totally alright. I’ve made peace with it, even found humour in it sometimes. It’s who I am, and I embrace it.”
Reflecting on his journey, Cobhams expressed pride in all he has accomplished despite the odds.
“I think it makes my story even more special — that I’ve been able to live the life I’ve lived and achieve all that I have. My blindness doesn’t define my limits. If anything, it has helped shape my strength.”
