Governor Peter Mbah Grants Pardon to 11 Inmates in Enugu, Offers Second Chance at Freedom

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has approved the release of 11 inmates from various correctional facilities in a move aimed at decongesting prisons and offering reformed individuals a second chance at life.

The development was announced on Sunday by Uche Anichukwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on External Relations. He said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration, rather than mere punishment.

According to Anichukwu, the clemency was granted in line with the Governor’s constitutional powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

The inmates were presented to the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kingsley Udeh, by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Victor Udeh.

Those granted pardon include Ugochukwu Oma, Onah Nnamdi, Chiadikobi Onu, Emmanuel Sambo, Emeka Nyia, Ngene Oluebube, Francis Chinecherem, Eze Chigozie, Anthony Tombari, Francis Chibuzor, and Uzoma Nnaoche.

Anichukwu explained that the decision was made after careful evaluation of the inmates’ conduct and evidence of reform. “These individuals have demonstrated a willingness to reintegrate into society and have acquired productive skills during their incarceration,” he said.

He added that the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy—which includes representatives from the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organisation (CAPIO), and the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP)—played a key role in vetting and recommending the beneficiaries.
