Popular gospel singer Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, widely known by his stage name New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.

His death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Benue State, particularly within the Christian community, where he was celebrated for revolutionizing Tiv Swange music as a powerful tool for evangelism.

Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group. Ortom described Ikyereve as a devoted Christian whose musical ministry resonated far beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That connection drew me to him, and it sparked a lasting relationship with his family.”

The former governor recounted a moment during an international programme in Australia where a Tiv man was teaching music while playing New Jerusalem’s songs in the background—a moment he described as proof of the late singer’s global gospel impact.

Ortom offered prayers for the bereaved family and vowed continued support to them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, assuring them that he would remain involved even after the burial.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, elder brother of the deceased, thanked Ortom for his unwavering support throughout Israel’s illness and after his passing. He revealed that one of the late singer’s sons was named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s compassion and close involvement in their lives.

Prayers were also offered by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both leaders of the Brethren Prayer Group.
