FUHSO VC moves to resolve water, power crisis after student protest

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Benue State, Professor Stephen Obekpa, has assured students that a Student-Management Liaison Committee will be established to foster open communication and address their concerns.
The development follows a recent peaceful protest by students over water shortages and power outages on campus.
During an engaging session with senior university officials and students, Professor Obekpa acknowledged the severe impact of the issues on student life and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to their welfare.
As a short-term solution, the Vice-Chancellor announced that he had secured the approval of the Chief Medical Director of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, to allow the university access to the hospital’s water tanker. Plans are also underway to procure a university-owned tanker, as authorized by the Pro-Chancellor.
Additionally, TETFund has indicated possible funding support for long-term water infrastructure development.
To tackle the persistent power outages, Professor Obekpa ordered the immediate payment of the university’s outstanding electricity bill by the Bursar, Mr. Alechenu Aba.
Further addressing student welfare, the Vice-Chancellor announced the establishment of a Sanitation Committee comprising both students and management to improve hygiene conditions on campus. Additionally, he revealed that ₦700 million had been secured to construct new hostel facilities, ensuring better accommodation for students.
These measures signal FUHSO’s renewed commitment to improving living conditions on campus and fostering a more responsive administration.
