From Classroom to Politics: the Jane Opoku-Agyemang Story

Ghana witnessed a historic moment on Tuesday as Professor Jane Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as the country’s first female Vice President.
The ceremony which took place in Accra, was with widespread national excitement.
At 73, Opoku-Agyemang has broken barriers, transitioning from academia to high political office. Her journey includes notable achievements, such as serving as Ghana’s first female Vice-Chancellor and holding ministerial positions.
Born on November 22, 1951, she earned degrees from the University of Cape Coast, the University of Dakar, and York University, Canada. Her academic contributions span literature and education leadership roles.
In 2024, she reentered politics after years in academia, becoming John Mahama’s running mate. Together, they secured victory, cementing her place as a trailblazer in Ghanaian and African politics.
This symbolizes progress in gender representation and leadership in Ghana, inspiring women across Africa to aspire to the highest levels of governance.
