Five Dead, Five Injured in Two Crashes on Lekki-Epe Expressway

At least five people were confirmed dead and five others injured in two separate accidents that occurred on Thursday along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that the first crash took place in the early hours of the day at Abijo Bus Stop, beneath the pedestrian bridge on the Epe-bound lane of the expressway.
According to the agency, the incident involved a Mitsubishi pick-up van with registration number AKD 733 JM, which was reportedly travelling at high speed before losing control and crashing into a stationary Craneburg Construction Company vehicle that was lawfully parked.
The impact of the crash claimed the lives of four passengers—three men and a woman—who were confirmed dead at the scene.
“LASTMA said its operatives successfully rescued three additional female occupants from the wreckage,” the statement read. “It also said the survivors were promptly stabilised and handed over to officers of the Eleko Division of the Nigeria Police Force for onward transfer to nearby medical institutions for urgent care and further evaluation.”
The second incident occurred overnight near the Frajend Group axis inward Bogije, also on the Lekki-Epe corridor. A Toyota Escort SUV, reportedly speeding, collided with a parked Dangote truck, resulting in the death of the driver.
Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were trapped in the wreckage. LASTMA officials, after a careful rescue operation, extricated both victims from the mangled vehicle.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that “upon successful recovery, both survivors were immediately placed in the custody of officers from the Elemoro Police Division, who ensured their prompt conveyance to medical facilities for life-saving intervention.”
He also quoted LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, as expressing deep sorrow over the incidents and sending condolences to the bereaved.
“We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this moment of unspeakable loss and anguish. It is our earnest prayer that the Almighty grants them the strength to bear these irreparable losses,” Bakare-Oki was quoted as saying.
He further urged all road users to avoid excessive speeding and reckless driving, warning that such behaviour continues to be a major cause of fatalities.
“These deeply saddening occurrences serve as grim reminders of the catastrophic consequences that stem from the willful violation of established speed regulations,” he said.
“The Lagos State Government has made substantial investments in traffic control infrastructure ranging from road signage and speed limiters to high-visibility furniture to mitigate such disasters.
Motorists are hereby implored to abide by these measures, which are designed solely for the preservation of human life,” he added.
