FG Threatens To Disconnect Power Firms Over Frequency Control

Published

The Federal Government has warned that power generation companies risk disconnection from the national grid if they fail to implement free government control (FGC) across their generating units.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued the directive under Order No. NERC/2025/094, which took effect on September 1, 2025. The order, signed in August by NERC Vice-Chairman Musiliu Oseni and Commissioner for Legal, Licensing, and Compliance Dafe Akpeneye, is aimed at preventing grid collapses.

According to the directive, any generating unit that remains non-compliant for 90 consecutive days faces total disconnection from the grid.

FGC enables a turbine or generator’s governor to automatically adjust power output in response to fluctuations in grid frequency. The order emphasized that Section 12.6.2 of the Grid Code mandates all generating units to be equipped with fast-acting FGC to regulate turbine speed and provide primary frequency control.

“This system is critical to maintaining grid stability by ensuring that output automatically responds to frequency deviations,” the order stated.
