FG Partners with WIOCC to Expand Internet Access to Three Million Homes

The Federal Government has signed an agreement with West Indian Ocean Cable Company to provide internet connectivity to three million homes in Nigeria. The signing ceremony took place in Abuja on Wednesday, 22nd of January, 2025.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, represented the government, while Mr. Darren Bedford, WIOCC’s Group Chief Business Development Officer, signed on behalf of the company.
The project aims to install fibre optic cables in homes, schools, and hospitals across Nigeria, ensuring reliable internet access. WIOCC has committed $10 million to the initiative.
Dr. Tijani stated that the project will lower internet costs by offering alternative connectivity sources beyond mobile phones. Notably, Nigerians will have more control over their internet expenses.
He added that the initiative supports the government’s goal of achieving a $1 trillion digital economy through strategic investments in internet infrastructure and services.
The partnership will provide minimum internet speeds of 25 Mbps in urban areas and 10 Mbps in rural communities, bringing Nigeria closer to global standards and improving connectivity.
Bedford described the collaboration as a significant step in reducing Nigeria’s digital divide, explaining its potential to connect more homes and businesses.
He noted that WIOCC has already connected 40,000 homes and institutions but faces challenges such as right-of-way restrictions and insecurity in some regions.
WIOCC plans to establish a digital platform to expand fibre networks and enhance broadband accessibility through collaboration with the Nigerian Broadband Alliance.
The project is expected to create jobs, support local talent, and foster economic growth by improving digital access for individuals and businesses nationwide.
