FG Inaugurates Committee for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Celebration

The Federal Government has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to coordinate activities for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration.
The committee is tasked with planning, organising, and implementing all approved programmes for the anniversary. Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, highlighted the importance of unity and patriotism in marking the country’s milestones.
‘‘This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going from here. As a nation, we have faced challenges in areas such as political, economic, and social issues, but we have overcome them. An anniversary is not just a celebration of the past. It is a call for action for the future. We must therefore commit ourselves to building a nation where every citizen feels valued and empowered to contribute their quota to the goals and aspirations of the country,” Akume said.
According to a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the celebration will begin with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Other activities include a Juma’at Service and women’s events on Friday, September 26; youth programmes and a historical arts exhibition on Saturday, September 27; a church service on Sunday, September 28; and a public lecture on Monday, September 29. The presidential broadcast and the traditional Independence Day Parade will hold on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
As part of the programme, Akume also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project workstation, initiated by CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with the SGF’s office. The project features a state-of-the-art studio for interview TV series with top government officials, documenting their contributions to nation-building under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The statement noted that the interview sessions began with Akume, who urged Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s progress over the past six and a half decades while maintaining trust in their leaders. “The national compendium would serve as a comprehensive repository of information on the nation’s milestones and development trajectory, cutting across the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial Nigeria with emphasis on the MDAs, the economy, the three tiers of Government, the Renewed Hope Agenda, and other key sectors of the economy,” it added.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. Today, the country stands as Africa’s most populous nation and one of the most populous in the world.
