Full Text: A viral TikTok video claiming that American President Donald Trump would restrict visas to Nigerians after his re-election in November 2024.
The video caption read: “Donald Trump just announced that American will no longer give Visas to Nigerian” which has garnered several reactions.
According to the audio, “I am announcing a temporary policy shift that aims to encourage Nigerians, especially those in critical professions, to stay invested and work in their homeland.
“As a part of this policy, the US will limit certain visa approval for Nigerian Professionals including doctors, nurses, engineering, and other fields.
“This is a call to action for Nigerians to dedicate their skills to the advancement of Nigeria itself.”

In 2020, The US Administration under the leadership of Donald Trump had previously announced a ban of Visas for six countries who failed to meet US security and information sharing standards including, Burma, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania. The restriction was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security and the Interagency. How, Nigerian immigrants were no longer eligible for visas allowing them to live permanently.
In 2022, Nigerian will constitute the largest population of African immigrants in the US, totaling 448,000 according to Migration Policy Institute.

However, there is no evidence that Mr. Trump is announcing a fresh restriction date. The only recent report published by U.S Mission Vietnam which stated the Mr. Trump’s America First priorities. The statement added, “The president is suspending refugee resettlement, after communities were forced to house large and unsustainable populations of migrants, straining community safety and resources.”
Also, In a press statement released on January 23, 2025 by U.S Mission of Nigeria, Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, stated that President Trump has made a clear direction to a guiding mission of American foreign policy.
“First, we must curb mass migration and secure our borders. The State Department will no longer undertake any activities that facilitate or encourage mass migration. Our diplomatic relations with other countries, particularly in the Western Hemisphere, will prioritize securing America’s border, stopping illegal and destabilizing migration, and negotiating the repatriation of illegal immigrants.” he said
