Equatorial Guinea President’s Son On Trial For Selling National Aircraft

Ruslan Obiang Nsue, son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, is facing trial in Malabo over the alleged illegal sale of an ATR 72-500 aircraft belonging to the state-owned Ceiba Intercontinental airline.

Prosecutors are seeking an 18-year prison sentence and a fine of 500 million CFA francs (about $850,000). Nsue, who previously served as deputy general director of the airline, admitted signing a contract to sell the plane to Spain’s Binter Technic for €250,000, but said he only received €125,000, which he transferred to his bank account in Spain.

The case stems from an investigation launched in late 2022 after the aircraft disappeared while undergoing maintenance in Spain. Nsue was arrested in January 2023, and the trial is currently ongoing with no verdict yet announced.
