EFCC Urges Student Leaders to Champion Anti-Cybercrime Campaign

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to take a frontline role in the fight against internet fraud by spreading anti-graft messages across campuses nationwide.
Olukoyede gave the charge on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, when a delegation of NANS paid a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. Represented by his Chief of Staff and Commander of the EFCC, CE Micheal Nzekwe, the EFCC Chairman lamented the rising cases of cybercrime and its damaging effect on Nigeria’s reputation both locally and internationally.
“The EFCC cannot do the work alone, we need Nigerians and every stakeholder. As students’ representatives, you are our partners in taming the menace of cybercrime on campuses; you can be our whistleblowers,” Nzekwe said.
He expressed concern over the emerging trend of cybercriminals being used to launder funds for politically exposed persons, urging the students to work with the Commission in exposing such activities. “We had a Cybercrime Summit where the Executive Chairman expressed serious concerns about cybercrime and how it has affected our national reputation. We can’t sit back and watch this ugly trend continue,” he added.
The EFCC boss further tasked NANS to design strategies for sensitizing students and sustaining the anti-graft fight among young people, stressing that their involvement was critical to addressing the scourge.
Earlier in his remarks, a former National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Bestman Okereafor, praised Olukoyede for what he described as tangible results in the fight against corruption.
“We have always stood with the Commission, and we will continue to stand with you. We commend the level of professionalism and open-door policy you have brought to the system. As partners in progress, we must always come out to support what you are doing because we will never be a party to mischievous propaganda, injustice, and wrongdoing,” Okereafor said.
He reaffirmed NANS’ readiness to collaborate with the EFCC in combating cybercrime and protecting the image of Nigeria.
