EFCC Releases Former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
Tambuwal was detained on Monday after responding to an EFCC invitation over allegations of fraudulent withdrawals totaling N189 billion during his tenure as governor. He was granted administrative bail and is expected to leave the EFCC headquarters after meeting his bail conditions.
In a related development, the EFCC condemned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for politicizing its investigation into Tambuwal.
In a statement signed by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Chairman Ola Olukoyede dismissed the ADC’s criticism as “self-serving, diversionary, narrow and idle,” stressing that the commission operates without bias.
Olukoyede highlighted that under his leadership, the EFCC has investigated both ruling party officials and opposition figures alike.
“If I am not condemned for investigating former and current governors and ministers from the ruling party, I should not be condemned for probing opposition leaders,” he said.
He called the ADC’s accusations—that summons to opposition members are politically motivated and based on old cases—unfounded, adding, “Every corruption allegation deserves investigation, regardless of timing.”
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and thoroughness in handling all cases involving politically exposed persons.
