Edo State Confirms Diphtheria Outbreak With Two Deaths

Edo State has confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria, resulting in two deaths, according to the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole.
Speaking during an emergency response meeting held Tuesday in Benin City, Oshiomhole disclosed that five cases had been confirmed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), including the two fatalities.
The high-level meeting brought together representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, local health agencies, and key stakeholders working to contain the emerging public health crisis.
Describing the outbreak as “a serious cause for concern,” Oshiomhole emphasized the severity of diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat and can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.
“The rise in cases, coupled with challenges like drug resistance and concurrent viral infections, calls for urgent and coordinated action,” he warned.
To combat the spread, the commissioner outlined several key strategies: the deployment of a rapid response team, enhanced surveillance and contact tracing, improved coordination, and widespread public education campaigns. He also stressed the importance of vaccine accessibility and community engagement.
Oshiomhole commended UBTH for their prompt action and acknowledged the continued support of international and local health partners.
Reassuring the public of the government’s commitment, he urged citizens to remain vigilant and report early symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and difficulty breathing. He also advised people to avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of illness.
“This is not a time to panic, but a time to prepare, stay informed, and act responsibly,” Oshiomhole said.
