More than 10 people were rescued on Saturday after a fatal crash on the Benin–Auchi highway, following the prompt intervention of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The governor, who was travelling to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area, encountered a traffic jam near the bypass and stepped out of his convoy to investigate.

According to Channels TV, Okpebholo arrived at the scene to find severely injured passengers bleeding profusely while bystanders watched helplessly. He immediately directed his aides to deploy two security Hilux trucks from his convoy to rush the victims to a nearby hospital.

Witnesses said the accident occurred when a white Toyota Venza with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW drove against traffic and crashed into three fully loaded commercial buses. The collision left multiple people injured and caused a heavy gridlock.

The governor personally oversaw the rescue, helping to carry victims—including a woman with deep wounds—into the vehicles for urgent treatment. He remained at the scene until the last injured passenger was evacuated under security escort before continuing his journey.

His quick action drew praise from residents, motorists and sympathisers. As of press time, neither the Federal Road Safety Corps nor the Edo State Government had issued an official statement on the incident.
