Ebonyi Radio GM Slams Nigeria’s “Rotten” Reward System

Godfrey Chikwere, General Manager of Ebonyi Private Radio station, Legacy Fm , has publicly criticized what he describes as a deeply flawed reward system in Nigeria, saying it encourages bad behaviour and undermines integrity at every level of society.

Reacting to recent events where individuals allegedly involved in inappropriate conduct at Nigerian airports are being celebrated and offered ambassadorial roles, Chikwere said the pattern reflects a national crisis in values.

“Some Nigerians, especially young people, are angry that the Federal Government rewards bad behaviour at our various airports with ambassadorial gestures,” Chikwere noted.

He argued that the real issue isn’t isolated incidents, but a culture of misplaced priorities that has taken root in families, communities, religious institutions, and all levels of governance.

“We easily understand that the major problem of Nigeria is a horrible reward system,” he said.

Drawing from social realities, Chikwere lamented how money—regardless of how it is made—automatically commands respect in families and communities. He also criticized how chieftaincy titles, political positions, and church recognition are often given to the wealthy or influential, regardless of their moral standing or qualifications.

“Even in families, once you make money by any means, you suddenly become head of the family… Churches are now champions in hero-worshipping, not worshippers of God,” he wrote.

He warned that the reward system, if left unchecked, will continue to discourage hard work and decency, especially among young people.

“A poor and bad reward system discourages dignity and weakens hard work.”

Referencing the viral case of a young woman known as Miss Emmerson, Chikwere predicted that brands and companies will likely flock to her not for her values or contribution to society, but for the controversy and attention she commands.

“Watch how companies will rush to make Miss Emmerson an ambassador… that’s how to capture attention in Nigeria,” he stated, adding that in the eyes of many, superficial appeal now trumps substance.

Chikwere concluded with a message of hope, encouraging Nigerians not to be swayed by society’s misplaced values:

“Don’t lose hope in your decent endeavours. Peace of mind and healthy sanity are bigger rewards… A legitimate single-room apartment is better than an estate stolen from a sleeping giant.”
