Ebonyi Pastor Arrested Over Alleged Rape of 14-Year-Old Church Member

A pastor in Ebonyi State has been arrested over allegations of raping a 14-year-old female member of his congregation.
According to law enforcement sources, the incident reportedly took place within the church premises in June but only came to light after the victim confided in her family, who subsequently filed a complaint with the police.
Confirming the arrest on Sunday, the Ebonyi State Police Command stated that preliminary findings, including medical examinations and statements from witnesses, supported the accusation and warranted the suspect’s detention.
“The suspect has been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation. We are committed to ensuring a thorough and impartial process,” a police spokesperson said.
Child rights advocates and civil society groups have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a grave violation of trust and a reminder of the need for stronger safeguards for minors within religious settings.
The leadership of the church involved has expressed shock over the allegations and has pledged to cooperate fully with investigators.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as the investigation proceeds. The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further legal action, is expected to be formally charged upon the completion of inquiries.
The Ebonyi State Police Command is calling on anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
