Ebonyi Govt, Legacy FM GM Trade Words Over Alleged Media Attacks

A war of words has broken out between the Ebonyi State Government and the General Manager of Legacy FM, Odo Godfrey Chikwere, over allegations of media attacks on Governor Francis Nwifuru.

In a statement published on Friday, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Monday Uzor, accused the GM of a privately owned radio station and a Spelling Bee coordinator of spearheading a smear campaign against the Governor on social media.

Dr. Uzor alleged that the attacks persisted despite the governor’s previous support for the station, including the donation of a sport utility vehicle (SUV), provision of a transformer, and construction of its access road. He called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to investigate, urging the public to disregard what he described as “commissioned” attempts to undermine the Governor’s rising profile.

Responding in a statement, Chikwere denied targeting the CPS’s position or undermining the Governor, saying, “I am not after your job. I am struggling but I am not greedy. I want your principal to succeed but you want a different thing.”

He accused Dr. Uzor of ridiculing legitimate businesses, including Orsa Herbal and the Spelling Bee competition, and demanded an apology to the brands. Chikwere also criticised the CPS for not defending the Governor against negative reports from national broadcasters such as Arise News and Channels Television.

The Legacy FM boss further alleged that Uzor’s actions could endanger his life, warning that the CPS would be held responsible should any harm come to him.

As of the time of filing this report, Dr. Uzor had not responded to Chikwere’s counter-allegations. Ebonyi
