Ebonyi Governor Sympathizes With Flood Victims in Afikpo, Abakaliki LGAs

Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has commiserated with communities hit by devastating floods in Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo, Afikpo Local Government Area, as well as Azuoto Okpuitumo in Abakaliki LGA.
The flood, which began penultimate Friday and only started receding on Monday, claimed lives and destroyed property across the affected areas.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Governor Nwifuru expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, condoling with families who lost loved ones and others who suffered damages.
“I sincerely condole the families who lost loved ones, as well as all who suffered losses during this unfortunate incident. As a government, we stand with you in this moment of grief, and I assure you that my administration will provide the necessary support to help you recover and rebuild,” the governor said.
He pledged to work closely with affected communities, local authorities, and relevant agencies to ensure swift delivery of relief materials, rehabilitation support, and preventive measures.
The governor also urged residents to factor the realities of climate change into their daily activities, particularly during rainy seasons, stressing the need to integrate climate change considerations into flood risk management strategies.
The floods, which began on Friday, August 1, 2025, receded by Monday, leaving in their wake tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. Multiple reports, including Naija News Today, confirm that at least eight persons, mostly women and children, perished in Enohia Itim. Rescue teams have recovered five bodies, while two remain missing, as the community mourns those swept away at farmlands and in a riverine boat during heavy downpour. Over 800 farmlands were also destroyed.
