Discipline, Service Key to Successful Service Year – NYSC DG

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has urged members of the 2026 Batch A, Stream I to embrace discipline, responsibility and commitment to national service in order to have a successful and rewarding service year.
Nafiu gave the charge during a virtual address to corps members across the 37 NYSC orientation camps nationwide.
He described national service as a call to character and selfless contribution to nation-building, stressing that it should not be viewed as an extension of academic life.
According to him, the orientation camp is carefully structured to prepare corps members for the one-year national service through activities aimed at building physical strength, mental alertness and moral discipline.
He reminded the corps members that they represent Nigeria at all times and must conduct themselves in a manner befitting the country. He warned against misconduct such as drug abuse, cybercrime, violence and other acts capable of tarnishing the image of the scheme.
Mr Nafiu also urged corps members to respect camp rules and work closely with camp officials and security personnel to ensure a safe and orderly orientation exercise.
He further charged them to see the service year as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national development and to promote unity among Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious or cultural differences.
According to him, the NYSC scheme remains a critical platform for fostering national integration and peaceful coexistence in the country.
The director-general advised corps members to take their health and personal safety seriously throughout the orientation course and service year. He encouraged them to remain security-conscious, avoid risky behaviours and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
Speaking on the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, Mr Nafiu urged corps members to take the initiative seriously, describing it as a viable platform for acquiring practical skills that would promote self-reliance after the service year.
