Dino Melaye Dumps PDP Over Party’s Failure To Rescue Nigeria

Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to provide effective solutions to Nigeria’s worsening political situation.

Melaye made the announcement in a post shared on his official X account on Thursday, where he also published a copy of his resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Dated July 4, 2025, the letter stated that his decision was based on what he described as the PDP’s “lack of potency and capacity to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”

The PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kogi said he could no longer, in good conscience, associate himself with a party that had, in his view, drifted from its original mission.

“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he wrote.

Melaye, however, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served under the PDP throughout his time as a member.

His departure comes amid a wave of defections and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Earlier this month, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also quit the PDP, citing deep-rooted internal divisions and a deviation from the party’s founding principles in a letter dated July 14, 2025.
