Delta Students Crowned World Debate Champions in Qatar, Make Nigeria Proud

Students from Delta State, Nigeria, have clinched the title of World School Debate Champions at the prestigious global competition held in Doha, Qatar, outshining top contenders from across the world.
Representing Nigeria after their national victory at the Presidential Schools Debate Nigeria, the team — composed of five brilliant debaters — showcased exceptional intellect and eloquence on the international stage. The team included Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Honour (Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka), Ekhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale).
The Delta team triumphed in the first round with a tight 2–1 win, before delivering a decisive 3–0 victory in the final, securing an impressive 5–1 aggregate score to claim the championship title. They overcame formidable teams from Chicago, USA and Qatar to emerge world champions.
Before their journey to Doha, the team was hosted by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at Government House, Asaba, where he offered his support and urged them to bring home glory. Their historic win has now drawn nationwide celebration, especially in Delta State, where the education sector continues to flourish under the governor’s MORE Agenda.
Education stakeholders, teachers, and the public have hailed the students’ achievement as a shining example of what Nigerian youth can accomplish with the right support. The victory is seen as a testament to the transformative power of education, critical thinking, and youth empowerment.
This global triumph not only boosts national pride but also reaffirms Delta State’s reputation as a center of academic and intellectual excellence.
