Chimamanda Adichie Backs Peter Obi Again, Says He’s Driven By Service Not Ambition

Renowned Nigerian author and public intellectual, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has once again expressed her strong support for Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, describing him as a leader driven by genuine service, not personal ambition.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Adichie highlighted Obi’s humility, consistency, and deep commitment to Nigeria, noting that her endorsement is rooted in patriotism and a firm belief in his leadership style.
“He doesn’t need to be president; he wants to be because he cares about Nigeria. That is a very important distinction,” she said. “There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have any good intentions for the country, but because of their egos.”
Adichie emphasized that Obi stands out among Nigerian politicians because of his integrity and approach to governance. “Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job. To him, leadership is a responsibility, not a favor,” she added.
She further described Obi as one of the most grounded individuals she has encountered, explaining that despite his years in politics, his values have remained unchanged.
“The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of his values. He is genuine, consistent, and curious — qualities that I believe are essential in a leader,” Adichie stated.
While she declined to comment on Obi’s potential candidacy in the 2027 elections, she reaffirmed her belief that he embodies the kind of leadership Nigeria desperately needs.
Adichie was one of Obi’s most vocal supporters during the 2023 presidential campaign. From social media tributes to a campaign video and a heartfelt birthday message, she publicly backed his bid for presidency. In 2022, she called him “my big bro” and declared her faith in his vision for the country.
After the controversial election, which saw President Bola Tinubu declared winner, Adichie wrote an open letter to then U.S. President Joe Biden, questioning the credibility of the process and citing irregularities allegedly overlooked by INEC.
She also made a public appearance at the Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja to show solidarity with Obi as he pursued legal action over the outcome.
Her continued support reflects a growing demand among many Nigerians for leaders who prioritize public service over personal gain — and Adichie remains firm in her belief that Peter Obi fits that mold.
