Bright Chimezie Applauds Davido and Omah Lay for Sampling His Classic Hit

Nigerian Highlife icon Bright Chimezie has publicly praised Davido and Omah Lay for their hit single “With You”, which samples his timeless track “Because of English.”

In a video shared on his official Instagram page, Chimezie is seen dancing energetically to the song while commending the artists for creatively incorporating elements from his classic.

“You can see I’m already vibing to the song. It’s a beautiful piece of work—truly wonderful,” Chimezie said. “I appreciate the fact that you acknowledged drawing inspiration from a song I recorded many years ago. Thank you for that.”

Davido responded to the video with heartfelt words in Igbo, showing deep respect for the music legend.
“Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu,” he wrote, which translates to, “People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend.”

“With You” appears on Davido’s fifth studio album and was produced by acclaimed beatmaker Tempoe. The track blends Highlife and Funk—a sound pioneered in Nigeria in the 1970s and ’80s by artists like Chimezie—bridging generational sounds in a modern fusion.
