Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Iliya Damagum, has downplayed the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing it as a routine event in the party’s political journey.

Speaking to journalists on Friday in Bauchi, Damagum said, “This is not the first time; we’re expecting him back.”

He noted that Atiku’s exit did not come as a shock to the party, adding that the PDP has grown accustomed to his frequent departures and returns over the years.

Damagum explained that Atiku’s latest move follows a familiar pattern in his political career and is viewed more as part of a strategy than a permanent split from the party.

He also suggested that the PDP’s calm reaction stems from either its confidence in its staying power or doubts about the finality of Atiku’s decision.

His comments come amid reports that the former vice president is floating a new political platform, the Alliance for Democratic Congress, ahead of the next general election.
