Atiku Says His Ambition Is About Rebuilding Nigeria, Not Becoming President At All Costs

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, says his political ambition is not about becoming president at all costs but about repositioning Nigeria for greatness.
Speaking on his behalf at a reception in Lagos on Saturday, Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, said Atiku’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was driven by a desire to build a united movement for national renewal rather than personal gain.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being president at all costs. It’s about having a government that can deliver for Nigerians. ADC, to us, is not just a party but a movement,” Olateju said.
Atiku stressed that Nigeria needs a fresh start as citizens struggle with subsidy removal, inflation, and insecurity, adding that the ADC provides a platform anchored on good governance and shared sacrifice.
He assured that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket would not be imposed on anyone but decided through a transparent and democratic process.
“Whoever emerges will represent the collective voice and aspiration of Nigerians. The point is not Atiku for president at all costs, not Obi for president at all costs. It is about a better Nigeria,” he added.
The event, organised by the ADC to welcome defectors from the PDP and Labour Party, saw the formal reception of top PDP figures such as Board of Trustees member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu; former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle; Lagos Central Vice Chairman; and ex-PDP Youth Leader Tai Benedict.
They were received by ADC leaders including National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State Chairman George Ashiru.
Atiku called on Nigerians to rise above partisan politics and rally behind a coalition that prioritises national interest over individual ambition.
