BREAKING: Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant political shift just two years ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated July 14 and released on Wednesday, Atiku confirmed his decision to leave the party he helped found, stating that the PDP no longer aligns with the principles upon which it was established.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku wrote.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”

He expressed gratitude for the platform PDP had given him over the years, especially during his two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and his two presidential runs under the party.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the party. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he added.

Atiku said his exit was driven by the party’s current direction, which he believes no longer reflects the original vision and values it once championed.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”

He also extended his best wishes to the PDP and its leadership, acknowledging the support he had received over the years.

Following Atiku’s resignation, all local government and ward chairmen in his home LGA of Jada, Adamawa State, have also announced their withdrawal from the party.

There is strong speculation that Atiku will soon declare for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as opposition forces prepare to consolidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
