Anambra Government Orders Repainting Of Dilapidated Buildings, Enforcement Begins July 1

The Anambra State Government has issued a directive mandating residents and property owners to repaint rundown buildings visible to the public, especially those contributing to environmental degradation across the state.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, said the initiative aims to enhance the state’s visual appeal and promote a cleaner, more eco-friendly environment. Priority areas for the operation include Onitsha, Awka, Nkpor, Nnewi, and Ekwulobia.
According to Odimegwu, the directive applies particularly to buildings that have not been repainted in over 10 years or structures whose current paint condition contributes to the visual blight of the area. He noted that repainting should begin immediately, while strict enforcement of compliance will commence on July 1.
“This exercise is designed to improve the state’s aesthetic environment, reinforce the durability of building structures, and expand green public spaces,” Odimegwu said, referencing the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law 2024, Part 4, Section 79 (1-7).
The Commissioner warned that inspections of affected properties will begin right away, especially in high-traffic and public-facing areas. The state’s regulatory agencies will conduct field visits to ensure adherence to the directive.
