Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State witnessed a near shutdown on Sunday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) officially received a large number of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defectors were led by Chief Kelvin Chukwu and included the entire executive members of the PDP in Ndufu Alike Ward, an event that drew a massive crowd of party supporters and residents.

The defection ceremony, which took place amid heavy political activities across the council area, was described by ADC leaders as a major boost to the party’s strength and grassroots expansion in Ebonyi State.

Addressing supporters at the event, Chief Chukwu said the decision to leave the PDP followed extensive consultations and was motivated by the desire to align with a political platform committed to good governance, inclusiveness, and people-centred development.

Welcoming the new members, officials of the ADC Ebonyi State chapter described the development as a clear indication that the party is gaining widespread acceptance across the state. They noted that the entry of experienced political actors at the ward level would further consolidate the party’s structure ahead of future elections.

The defection reportedly caused a temporary halt to commercial and vehicular movement in parts of Ikwo LGA as supporters converged for the reception.

As at the time of filing this report, the leadership of the PDP in the state had not issued any official reaction to the development.

Political analysts say the mass defection highlights shifting political loyalties in Ebonyi State and signals intensified political activities as the state moves towards the next electoral cycle.
