ADC Constitution Disqualifies Peter Obi from 2027 Presidential Bid

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed that former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains eligible to contest for its presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections, despite still being a member of the LP.

The clarification follows rising speculation about Obi’s status in the newly formed opposition coalition, especially after key defections by figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-APC stalwart Rotimi Amaechi.

In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, ADC’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, revealed that both Obi and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai were granted “special concessions” by the party, citing ongoing political strategies.

“Peter Obi is part of the coalition. He and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai were given special concessions by the party because their followers were given tickets to contest elections,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that the arrangement was intentional, allowing both politicians to remain temporarily in their current parties to support loyal candidates already in the race under LP and SDP platforms.

“The understanding is that since their followers had secured tickets in LP and SDP, they stay back until the processes are completed. They will be allowed to join fully after the elections,” he added.

Obi’s loyalists are currently contesting the upcoming Anambra governorship election under the LP, while El-Rufai is backing candidates in federal constituency bye-elections under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
