Abure Challenges Peter Obi, Others to Prove Financial Allegations

Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, has issued a strong rebuttal to corruption allegations against him, challenging former presidential candidate Peter Obi and other aspirants from the 2023 elections to present evidence of any funds they claim to have given him or the party.
In a video broadcast by Symfoni on Tuesday, Abure addressed party members in the Federal Capital Territory, categorically denying that he received money for personal use from any party candidate, including Obi.
“I challenge all of them—from Peter Obi downward—who contested under our platform. Let anyone come forward and show the world what they gave to me or the party,” Abure said. “If they have proof, let them show it. If not, let them stay silent forever.”
He criticized the ongoing accusations as baseless “cowardly whispers” and accused his critics of hiding behind media narratives instead of confronting party leadership directly.
Abure also hinted at an impending world press conference, during which he vowed to expose members of an opposing faction within the party. He said his previous silence was a gesture of leadership and a hope for reconciliation, but warned that he would not hesitate to speak out if the attacks continue.
“When people talked about agents and election funds, I stayed quiet. I believed it was my responsibility to manage both the good and the bad,” he stated. “But now some individuals are crossing the line. If they provoke me further, when I speak, their reputation will be like rotten eggs—no one will want them.”
He also criticized Abia State Governor, Alex Otti—Labour Party’s sole elected governor—for allegedly not contributing financially to the party during the elections.
“Look at the governor hopping around like a cricket. We didn’t collect a single kobo from him,” Abure claimed. “When I met him at Transcorp, he asked, ‘Chairman, what should I do for you?’ I told him, ‘Nothing. Use your money for your own election.’”
Abure added that aside from a handful of lawmakers who made minor contributions, the party did not receive significant financial support from its elected officials.
Dismissing the corruption accusations as politically motivated, Abure insisted that the party leadership rejected multi-billion-naira bribes during the election, citing a commitment to integrity.
“We turned down those offers because of the values we stood for. Now, these same people want to push us out,” he said.
