As the race for the 2027 general elections heats up, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has revealed that discussions are ongoing to bring Peter Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan back into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the presidential contest.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Moro disclosed that party stakeholders are reaching out to the duo ahead of the polls.

“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi — ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,’” Moro said.

When asked about Jonathan’s possible return, the senator representing Benue South responded, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”

Jonathan, who governed under the PDP from 2010 to 2015 after succeeding the late Musa Yar’Adua, has kept a low political profile since losing to Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election. While he has not declared any interest in running again, he also has not publicly resigned his PDP membership.

Peter Obi, a former PDP vice-presidential candidate in 2019, left the party ahead of the 2023 elections to contest under the Labour Party (LP), where he garnered over six million votes and finished third behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar.

With less than two years to the next election, Obi has aligned with top opposition figures, including Atiku, under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition. Though he has expressed interest in another presidential bid, it remains uncertain which platform he will choose.
