The Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Eze Francis Igwe, the father of former Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Kelechi Igwe.
Eze Igwe reportedly died in captivity after he was abducted by unknown gunmen a few days ago.
Reacting to the development in a statement on Friday, Umahi described the monarch’s death as shocking and heartbreaking.
The minister said the late traditional ruler was widely respected for his wisdom, calm disposition and commitment to the peace and development of his community.
According to him, the monarch’s death is not only a painful loss to his immediate family but also to the traditional institution and the entire Ebonyi State.
“This is shocking, very sad and still feels like a dream. It is painful to imagine that such a respected elder and traditional ruler could meet such a tragic end,” Umahi said.
The former governor of Ebonyi State also sympathised with Kelechi Igwe, who served as his deputy during his tenure as governor.
“I deeply feel the pain of my brother and former Deputy Governor, Barr. Kelechi Igwe, and the entire Igwe family at this moment. Losing a father is always painful, but the nature of this tragedy makes it even more heartbreaking. My prayers and thoughts are with the family,” he added.
Umahi commended security agencies for the swift arrest of suspects allegedly involved in the crime, expressing hope that justice would be served.
He prayed for the repose of the soul of the late monarch and asked God to grant his family and community the strength to bear the loss.
