Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Ebonyi State have arrested seven suspects over the kidnapping and killing of a traditional ruler, Eze Francis Igwe.

The monarch was abducted on March 1, 2026, prompting the Ebonyi State Police Command to launch an intensive operation aimed at rescuing him.

Spokesperson for the command, Joshua Ukandu, disclosed in a statement on Friday that two suspects linked to the kidnapping syndicate were initially arrested through intelligence-led operations.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed that the monarch had been killed on March 2, 2026. They also volunteered to lead police operatives to their hideout and assist in recovering the monarch’s remains.

However, as operatives approached the location, other members of the gang allegedly opened fire on the officers. The police responded, leading to a gun battle during which one of the hoodlums was neutralised while others fled.

Ukandu said seven additional suspects were subsequently arrested, and a locally made pistol was recovered from them.
The police later recovered the remains of the traditional ruler, which have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
The suspects are currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the gang. They will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, the police said.

The statement was issued in Abakaliki on Friday.
