President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proposed a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Army as part of efforts to improve the welfare of military officers and personnel.
The proposed salary review, which is expected to take effect once passed into law, would significantly increase the monthly earnings of both non-commissioned and commissioned officers.
Under the proposal, a Private would earn about ₦300,000 monthly, while a Lance Corporal would receive ₦350,000 and a Corporal ₦400,000. A Sergeant would earn ₦460,000, while a Staff Sergeant would receive ₦510,000.
Similarly, a Warrant Officer would earn ₦600,000, while a Master Warrant Officer and Army Warrant Officer would receive ₦680,000 and ₦890,000 respectively.
For commissioned officers, a Second Lieutenant would earn ₦510,000 monthly, while a Lieutenant would receive ₦580,000 and a Captain ₦690,000. A Major would earn ₦770,000, while a Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel would receive ₦850,000 and ₦970,000 respectively.
At the top ranks, a Brigadier General would earn ₦1.5 million monthly, a Major General ₦2.5 million, while a Lieutenant General and a General would receive ₦3.6 million and ₦4.9 million respectively.
The development comes as the Nigerian Army continues its campaign urging more youths, particularly from the South-East region, to enlist in the military.
Authorities say the proposed salary review is aimed at boosting morale among troops and strengthening recruitment across the country.
