62 dead in Lagos fire, building collapse incidents – Report

At least 62 lives were lost to fire outbreaks and building collapse incidents across Lagos State between January and June 2025, according to the mid-year activity report released by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LSFRS.
The report, made public on Monday, provides a detailed account of the agency’s emergency operations during the first half of the year.
In a statement issued by the Senior Public Affairs Officer of the LSFRS, Maria Fadairo, the agency disclosed that it responded to a total of 1,072 emergency incidents within the six-month period.
These incidents included 922 fire outbreaks, two minor explosions, and 10 cases of building collapse, eight of which were partial. The agency also carried out 73 rescue operations and 65 salvage missions across the state.
“Between January and June 2025, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service recorded significant activity in its emergency response efforts,” the statement read. “Despite notable challenges, the Service remained committed to saving lives and protecting property.”
The report also highlighted the persistent issue of hoax calls, with the agency receiving 315 false emergency alerts during the reporting period, which it described as a growing concern.
The LSFRS successfully rescued 252 people from life-threatening situations, including incidents involving structural failures and fire emergencies.
“A total of 62 fatalities were recorded during this period,” the statement noted.
Despite the loss of lives and property, the agency’s proactive efforts were said to have averted further devastation, with property valued at approximately N64.32 billion saved, though losses still amounted to around N10.72 billion.
