5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Turkey’s Coast, One Teen Dead and Dozens Injured

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Marmaris, a popular resort town in southwestern Turkey, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
The tremor occurred at approximately 2:17 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of about 60 kilometers (37 miles), which helped reduce the potential for severe surface damage.
Casualties and Injuries
Tragically, a 14-year-old girl in Fethiye died after suffering a panic-induced medical emergency during the quake. Around 70 people were injured—most of them hurt while trying to flee in panic, including several who jumped from windows and balconies.
Structural Impact
No major structural damage was reported, though two buildings in Marmaris sustained minor cracks. Emergency services were quick to respond, and local authorities confirmed that the situation was under control.

Regional Tremors
The quake was felt across a wide region:
- Greece: Tremors were strongly felt on the nearby island of Rhodes, just 18 miles from the epicenter, prompting residents and tourists to evacuate buildings. No serious damage was reported.
- Egypt: People in parts of Egypt also felt the quake, but no injuries or damage occurred there.
Seismic Background
Turkey sits on multiple active fault lines and is highly prone to earthquakes. This event follows a 6.2 magnitude earthquake near Istanbul on April 23, 2025, which left one person dead and over 350 injured.
Authorities continue to monitor the area for aftershocks, though no tsunami warnings have been issued.
