NSIB Report: Air Peace Pilots Test Positive for Alcohol and Drugs

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that the pilot and co-pilot of an Air Peace aircraft tested positive for alcohol and drugs following a runway incident at the Port Harcourt International Airport on July 13, 2025.
In its preliminary report, signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the bureau said the Boeing 737 involved in the incident had 103 passengers on board and was operating a Lagos–Port Harcourt service.
The flight reportedly made an unstabilised approach before landing long on Runway 21, touching down 2,264 metres from the threshold and coming to a halt 209 metres into the clearway. No injuries or damage were recorded, and all passengers disembarked safely.
Toxicological tests conducted at the Rivers State Hospital Laboratory revealed the presence of alcohol in the systems of the captain and first officer. Another crew member was found to have tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance in cannabis.
The bureau stated that these results are being reviewed under human performance and safety management considerations. It has also issued interim safety recommendations to Air Peace, urging stronger measures on crew training, decision-making in unstabilised approaches, and stricter monitoring of crew fitness before dispatch.
The NSIB added that further details will be made available as the investigation progresses.
