The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI) has successfully concluded its maiden ASUU FUNAI Sports Fiesta and Health Week, capping the weeklong event with indigent scholarship awards to deserving students.
The programme, which ran from Monday, February 23 to Friday, February 27, 2026, marked a historic moment for the institution as academic activities were suspended for the first time in 15 years to allow staff and students to participate in sports, health checks, and wellness activities.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Joe Chukwu, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, described the event as rewarding and unifying, noting the overwhelming spirit of camaraderie among participants despite the competitive nature of the games.
Beyond sports and wellness, the union also took time to demonstrate its social commitment by awarding 10 scholarships to indigent FUNAI students, in addition to two scholarships sponsored by the ASUU National Office. Beneficiaries of the national awards received ₦200,000 each, while the remaining ten students were awarded 25 per cent of ₦200,000.
Among the scholarship recipients were Okike Faith Amarachi, Alimo Deborah Onyinyechi, and Emmanuel Victory Ikechukwu, all from the Department of Mass Communication, Jackson’s House.
Dr. Chukwu congratulated the beneficiaries and praised ASUU for the impactful initiative, noting that it dispelled the notion that ASUU activities are solely about strikes.
He described the week as a memorable milestone in FUNAI’s history, successfully blending sports, health advocacy, relaxation, and academic support.
