National Grid Collapses Again

The national electricity grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, plunging several parts of the country into blackout.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the development in a public notice shared via its official X handle on September 10, 2025.
According to the notice, “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”
AEDC assured customers that efforts were underway to restore power, stating, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding. For further updates or inquiries, call: 08039070070. WhatsApp: 08152141414, 08152151515.”
The latest incident adds to a long list of grid failures. In 2024 alone, the system collapsed 12 times, and records show more than 100 nationwide disruptions over the past decade. Earlier this year, in February, another collapse left millions without electricity.
In response to the crisis, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April approved six companies and one private university to generate and distribute their own power. Yet, in its July report, the commission insisted, “There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1.”
