Former Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Shot Dead

Shock and outrage swept through Ukraine on Saturday after former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in the western city of Lviv. Authorities confirmed the killing, which President Volodymyr Zelensky described as a “horrific murder.”
Zelensky pledged that investigators would leave no stone unturned in uncovering those behind the attack. “A thorough investigation” must be carried out, he said, as the nation reeled from the death of one of its most recognizable political figures.
Police reported that Parubiy, 54, “died on the spot as a result of his injuries.” Security forces are now hunting for the gunman, though officials noted that the motive remains unclear.
Parubiy’s career spanned some of Ukraine’s most turbulent years. He served as speaker of parliament from 2016 to 2019 and was a vocal supporter of both the pro-European Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Maidan Revolution of 2014, which reshaped the country’s political direction.
His sudden killing has sent shockwaves through Ukrainian politics, marking the loss of a figure closely tied to the nation’s democratic struggles.
