The Students’ Union Government (SUG) Senate of Ebonyi State University has suspended its Director of Transportation over alleged discrepancies in funds generated during the institution’s recent matriculation ceremony.

In a memorandum dated March 10, 2026, the Senate said the action followed the official’s failure to submit a financial report of funds collected during the exercise.

The memo, signed by the Senate President of the Ebonyi State University Students’ Union Government, Marvelous Elochukwu, stated that the director was expected to present a comprehensive financial account to the Executive President of the union in line with established administrative procedures.

However, one week after the matriculation ceremony, the official reportedly failed to submit any report, prompting the Senate to invite him for a hearing.

During the hearing, he claimed that a total sum of ₦350,000 was collected during the exercise and that part of the money had been spent on operational activities, adding that the union was instead owing him ₦150,000.

The Senate subsequently constituted an ad hoc investigation committee to verify the claims and determine the actual amount generated during the matriculation ceremony.

According to the findings of the committee, interviews with commercial transport operators and other individuals involved in the exercise revealed that about ₦2,325,500 was collected during the event.

The committee also discovered that the alternative receipts the director alleged were used by another individual were actually printed by him.

The Senate further stated that the director failed to honour several invitations by the investigation committee to clarify the discrepancies and allegedly made insulting remarks against members of the committee.

Following the findings, the Senate suspended the Director of Transportation with immediate effect pending further disciplinary action.

He was also directed to refund the sum of ₦2,325,500 to the union and issue a written public apology to the Executive President of the SUG, the Deputy Senate President and members of the investigation committee, as well as the Senate Chamber and the entire union.

The Senate warned that the refund and apology must be submitted within 48 hours, failing which the matter would be escalated to the appropriate disciplinary authorities of the university.

The memorandum was also signed by the Senate Clerk, Iduma Benjamin.
