Tragedy struck at Ibeju Bus Stop on the Lekki–Epe Expressway, Lagos, where six people lost their lives and nine others sustained serious injuries in a ghastly accident.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed on Monday that the crash occurred after a truck rammed into a commercial bus. Victims of the accident included two adult males, three adult females, and a child. Miraculously, four other passengers escaped unhurt.

Preliminary findings showed that a blue Volvo FL6 truck carrying wooden planks collided with a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD.

“The nine injured survivors were swiftly extricated by LASTMA officials with support from other emergency responders and immediately conveyed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Epe and Hammond Hospital for urgent medical attention,” said Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department.

He further explained that the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FMC morgue in Epe, where families are expected to formally identify them. The four survivors who were not injured received immediate care from the LASTMA Rescue Unit, assisted by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).

The swift emergency response ensured that victims were evacuated without delay and that traffic flow was quickly restored at the accident site.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families while raising alarm over the rising spate of reckless driving on Lagos highways. He warned motorists against speeding, noting that “speed thrills, but ultimately kills.”

Bakare-Oki also called on drivers to obey road rules, stay alert, and avoid distractions, particularly during the Ember Months, a season notorious for high numbers of road accidents.
