Red Cross Educates Lagos Corps Members on Rescue Protocols

In an effort to arm National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with crucial life-saving techniques, Mr. Solomon Ekan, the Head of Red Cross for NYSC in Lagos State, spearheaded a comprehensive awareness session at the Iyana Ipaja orientation camp, Lagos State.
During his presentation, Mr. Ekan prioritized casualty management, offering practical guidance complemented by demonstrations from Red Cross corps members. Emphasizing the urgency of prompt action during emergencies, he outlined First Aid as the initial assistance rendered to an injured individual before professional medical aid arrives. He underscored the vital importance of promptly addressing excessive bleeding, cautioning that even a pint of blood loss could prove fatal.
Turning to scenarios involving respiratory distress, Mr. Ekan elucidated the significance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), detailing the DR ABC protocol:
D – Danger (ensuring safety, assessing potential hazards)
R – Response (promptly seeking the casualty’s response)
A – Airway (ensuring unobstructed breathing if no response)
C – Compression (administering 30 chest compressions)

Furthermore, he emphasized that only medical professionals can officially declare a person deceased. Even in cases where CPR fails to elicit a response, it sustains brain function, necessitating continued efforts until professional assistance is available. Reflecting on the origins of the Red Cross, Mr. Ekan traced its roots to a Swiss entrepreneur who, witnessing a 16-hour war resulting in preventable loss of life, felt compelled to establish an organization committed to averting such tragedies.

Wrapping up the session, Mr. Ekan reaffirmed the fundamental principles guiding the Red Cross mission, including Humanity, Impartiality, Universality, Neutrality, Independence, and Unity, among others.
