OpenAI unveils image creation feature in ChatGPT

OpenAI, the AI startup behind ChatGPT, has integrated image generation directly into the chatbot, allowing users to create and modify images using GPT-4o, the company announced in a blog post on Tuesday.

Describing the update as a major advancement, OpenAI said it is a step toward making image creation a core feature of AI-driven communication. The announcement included a sample image on its website, highlighting improvements in text accuracy within AI-generated visuals compared to previous models.

This update aims to enhance the quality of AI-generated content, particularly addressing earlier limitations in rendering text and intricate details. While ChatGPT, with DALL·E integration, has been capable of generating images for some time, OpenAI’s latest update streamlines this feature, making it faster, more interactive, and improving functionalities like inpainting.

“At OpenAI, we’ve always believed that image generation should be a fundamental capability of our language models. That’s why we’ve integrated our most advanced image generator yet into GPT-4o. The result is image generation that is not only beautiful but also highly functional,” the blog post explained.

The feature is now available across all subscription tiers, including Plus, Pro, Team, and Free. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that while this rollout offers users a new level of creative freedom, some generated content may be controversial.
