The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has visited Rivers State to inspect major federal road projects, saying it wanted to see their progress first-hand and report its findings to Nigerian students.

The delegation was led by the President of the NANS Senate, Dist. Senator Ibeabuchi Moses Onyia. It included national officers, zonal coordinators, state executives, campus leaders and students.

Projects on the itinerary

The team inspected three major federal projects:

  • East–West Road, Section II (Subsection I), from Eleme Junction, Port Harcourt, to Ahoada
  • Bodo–Bonny Road, with bridges across the Opobo Channel
  • Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway (Port Harcourt–Aba section)

Bodo–Bonny Road and bridges

The delegation was most struck by the Bodo–Bonny Road and the bridges over the Opobo Channel.

For many years, getting to Bonny meant travelling by boat or canoe or, for those who could afford it, by helicopter. These options were slow, costly and often dangerous, especially for students, traders, families and the sick, who had to cross open water in all weather.

The road and bridges end that isolation. Bonny now has a safe, dependable land link to the mainland, which means faster travel, cheaper goods, easier access to schools and hospitals, and new openings for business and investment.

Other projects

On the East–West Road and the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, the delegation noted solid workmanship, orderly sites and visible progress. These corridors are vital routes for people and freight across the South-South and the South-East.

Senator Onyia commended the Federal Ministry of Works for the standard, discipline and professionalism shown on every project, and urged it to keep up the momentum until completion.

Vote of confidence

On behalf of NANS and Nigerian students, he passed a vote of confidence in the Honourable Minister of Works, Sen. Engr. David Umahi, for his close supervision and results. The same confidence was extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his resolve to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure.

NANS thanked the President for connecting communities that were long cut off, and for opening these regions to trade, investment and growth.

“Safer roads and bridges protect lives, create jobs and give young Nigerians confidence in the future,” the Senate President said.

He thanked all participants and urged student leaders to keep monitoring public projects and giving constructive feedback, adding that NANS will continue to partner with government for national progress.
