Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to stop what he described as the persecution of political opponents under the guise of criminal prosecution.

In a statement on Monday, Obi warned that undermining the rule of law could harm Nigeria’s democratic stability and economic development.

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern over the arrest and continued detention of some leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Obi said the timing of the arrests, which he noted came shortly after the politicians declared their intention to ensure the current administration is voted out in the 2027 Nigerian general election, raises serious concerns.

He also criticised the conditions surrounding their detention, alleging that the denial of bail or the imposition of stringent bail conditions suggests that criminal prosecution is being used as a political weapon.

Speaking specifically on El-Rufai’s case, Obi said the former governor’s repeated transfers between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) raise questions about the credibility of the investigation.

According to him, the development suggests authorities may be searching for charges rather than pursuing a clearly established case.

Obi stressed that Nigeria must maintain a justice system that gives citizens confidence that no one will face persecution because of their political beliefs.

He added that while he supports the fight against corruption, such efforts must be carried out with integrity, transparency, and without selectivity.

“A credible anti-corruption campaign must start with those in power and not be used to target political opponents,” Obi said.

He concluded by reiterating his message that a better Nigeria remains possible.
